Let's get domesticated!
As I mentioned a few weeks ago, Steve and I have been absolutely blown away by all of the amazing people that have shown so much love and support to us during this season as new parents. Seriously, people that we barely know have come out of the woodwork to provide meals for us and it has been so appreciated!
Not only has it challenged me to be better at going out of my way for strangers, but it has also challenged me to get more domestic!

The other day one of Steve's customers from work mentioned that she knew we didn't have any family in town and would love to provide a meal for us. It was so sweet and thoughtful, especially since we knew this lady (who is our age) is busy with 3 small kids of her own. I had actually never met her, and Steve barely knows her from her coming in once a week or so.

Anyway, so she brought us over some food on Tuesday and it was simply amazing! Seriously, most of the food was all from her garden and all of it was completely from scratch! We had homemade bread, blueberry scones, and awesome pasta with pesto sauce and some chorizo soup. We obviously still haven't finished it all, but it is seriously some of the best food we've had in awhile and I felt so inspired to up my skills (if that's what you can even call them) in the kitchen.

You would think that with some of the amazing ladies in my life (that would be you, Missy and Sarah) that can dance circles around Betty Crocker herself, I would have got this whole culinary art thing down. Instead though, I normally just enjoy the fruit of their work and then come home to make my usual grilled chicken salad or frozen spinach pie from trader joe's (which is super yummy by the way).

Now that I have the opportunity to be home and not so stressed though, I want to take advantage of it! Sure, being a stay at home mom is a full time job, but even with a newborn that completely exhausts me, I still feel like I have way more time and energy than I ever did on a slow day at work. Hopefully soon, I'll get to cooking more from scratch and Steve will be loving it!

Any tips on how to get started?

Well, since you mentioned Betty Crocker I would suggest getting yourself a great cookbook. Something simple. My first was a Betty Crocker cookbook that taught me all the basics like meatloaf and homemade mac n cheese. Pick things you like and don't be afraid to mess up. Enlist the help of your friends who have more experience if things come up that seem difficult or you don't understand. Have fun, I love cooking for my family! I have discovered that things I thought I didn't like I actually really enjoy eating if I make it myself:)

I agree with the starting simple. Pick things that you already like. Ask around for tried and true recipes and if you find something online, check the comments about the recipe first. Be realistic with your time, also. I've gotten myself into issues because of things taking waaaayyyy too long to make and the last thing you want to do is spend all day making one meal - at least at this stage of the game! You have more important things to do with your time!

Here's a link to Kraft, you can sign up for a free monthly (maybe it's quarterly?) magazine with recipes. They're always pretty simple.

On the sidebar of my blog I have some of my favorite recipes - You can always start there! :)

Good Luck!

Oh No! I just went to the kraft site and they make you pay for the Food & Family magazine now! It used to be free! Sorry!

Thanks ladies! I used to cook a little more often, but since I've been married it's always worked out where Steve gets home from work 2 hours ahead of me, so he's done all the cooking. Getting back into the swing of things after all these years is a little overwhelming. It doesn't help that I really hate cooking. I love baking though!
Charisa, now it makes sense why we haven't got the kraft foods magazine in awhile! We used to get it to, I guess back when it was free, but realized when I read that they charged now that we hadn't got it in a year or so. I do remember they had lots of easy recipes! I'll have to check out their website, I think they still have lots of recipes there.
Tonight I"m gonna start with just some breaded chicken and steamed veggies. Nice and easy!

I love you. I KNOW you can cook. You just haven't had to need or chance to...up those skills, baby cakes. I believe in you. :)
